The feeding habits and food selectivity ofBranchinecta gaini were studied in six ponds on an Antarctic island.B. gaini behaves as a detritovorous, herbivorous filter-feeder, feeding largely on organic sediments and bottom communities. The bulk of the gut contents were formed from amorphous organic material presumably of vegetal origin, and a great variety(More)
I. elegans n.sp. from the Parana River, northeastern Argentina is proposed and its morphological features are compared with those of the apparently related I. agilis. Its outstanding characteristics are the long 2rd to 5th setae of ventral margin of the valves, the rudimentary nature of defensive setae, the low number of spines in the preanal lobe of(More)
Daphnia sarsi Daday, 1902 is redescribed from Patagonian populations and type material. Its taxonomic and nomenclatorial status is discussed. Because of the homonymy with D. sarsi Schödler, 1877, assigned to Australian populations, D. dadayana is proposed as new name. It is concluded that D. dadayana is a valid species with several morphological(More)
The mean body size of limnetic cladocerans decreases from cold temperate to tropical regions, in both the northern and the southern hemisphere. This size shift has been attributed to both direct (e.g. physiological) or indirect (especially increased predation) impacts. To provide further information on the role of predation, we compiled results from several(More)
Six storm periods were monitored from November 2002 to September 2005 at two stations of a receiving pond of the stormwater runoff from a small urban catchment of the city of Santa Fe, Argentina. Weekly samples were taken before and after rain events under different conditions of temperature, pluvial precipitation, and duration of the previous dry period. A(More)
A new species of Ilyocryptus Sars from several localities in River Paraná basin, is described and figured. By the presence of a lateral process on the valves I. paranaensis n.sp. resembles I. cornutus Mordukhai-Boltovskoi & Chircova, but it shows several morphological differences in the shape and the armature of the postabdomen and in the antennal formula.
Since the 1990s the Río de La Plata basin has been widely colonized by the invader mollusk Limnoperna fortunei. In spite of a relatively well-developed knowledge of the biology and ecology of this mollusk, not much is known about its natural diet and possible food selectivity. Stomach contents of 120 specimens attached to the roots of Eichhornia crassipes,(More)
Among zooplankton behaviors, diel migrations constitute one of the most effective predator avoidance strategy and confer metabolic and demographic advantages. We aim to examine whether sublethal concentrations of two widespread pollutants (a pesticide with endosulfan and chromium as potassium dichromate) alter the depth selection, vertical migration and(More)
The feeding habits and selectivity of Macrobrachium borelliiwere studied by examining the stomach content of specimens from anox-bow lake across one year. M. borellii isomnivorous-carnivorous, feeding largely on members oflittoral-benthic communities. The bulk of the stomach content wasformed by oligochaetes, dipteran larvae, and a variety of(More)
The purpose of this work was to experimentally analyze the impact of copper, chromium and a commercial pesticide with endosulfan on the escape behavior of two copepods (Notodiaptomus conifer, Argyrodiaptomus falcifer) and three cladocerans (Daphnia magna, Pseudosida variabilis and Ceriodaphnia dubia). The experimental assays were carried out using a novel(More)
