Neuropathic pain is a clinical manifestation of nerve injury difficult to treat even with potent analgesic compounds. Here, we used different lines of genetically modified mice to clarify the role played by CB(2) cannabinoid receptors in the regulation of the central immune responses leading to the development of neuropathic pain. CB(2) knock-out mice and(More)
Nerve injuries often lead to neuropathic pain syndrome. The mechanisms contributing to this syndrome involve local inflammatory responses, activation of glia cells, and changes in the plasticity of neuronal nociceptive pathways. Cannabinoid CB(2) receptors contribute to the local containment of neuropathic pain by modulating glial activation in response to(More)
The aim of this survey was twofold: to assess the willingness of medical students to volunteer for clinical trials and to evaluate the weight of the financial reward and other general details as seen by healthy volunteers who had already participated in clinical trials. A specific questionnaire was given to each group to be answered anonymously. Among the(More)
Epidemiological studies help to establish the health status in a country and allow a better allocation of economic resources. This survey estimated pain prevalence in Catalonia (Spain), analysed its relationship with demographic variables and evaluated pain-associated disabilities. The study was carried out in 1964 adults via phone interviews asking about(More)
BACKGROUND Back pain is a common symptom of health assistance in Western countries. The goal of the present survey was to establish the prevalence of back pain in the general population in Catalonia, as well as to establish its characteristics, its relationship to sociodemographic variables, the therapeutic behavior followed by those affected and the(More)
Several new 12-amino-6,7,10,11-tetrahydro-7, 11-methanocycloocta[b]quinoline derivatives (tacrine-huperzine A hybrids, huprines) have been synthesized and tested as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. All of the new compounds contain either a methyl or ethyl group at position 9 and one or two (chloro, fluoro, or methyl) substituents at positions 1, 2,(More)
We identified Exophiala spinifera as the causal agent in a case of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in El Salvador. Identification was based on the morphology of the fungus in tissue and the microscopic features of the culture obtained from the biopsy material. This case is the first of this type to be documented from Central America.
Seventeen polycyclic compounds related to tacrine and huperzine A have been prepared as racemic mixtures and tested as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors. The conjunctive pharmacomodulation of huperzine A (carbobicyclic substructure) and tacrine (4-aminoquinoline substructure) led to compound 7jy, 2.5 times less active than tacrine as AChE inhibitor,(More)
Several epidemiological studies have shown that pain is a very common complaint in patients who seek medical care. However, the characteristics of how pain is treated in the general population have been studied less. The present survey was conducted to describe and analyze how the general population of Catalonia (Spain) approaches the treatment of their(More)
OBJECTIVE Versions of the McGill Pain Questionnaire are available in a several languages and are used in clinical studies and sociocultural or ethnic comparisons of pain issues. However, there is a lack of studies that compare the validity and reliability of the instrument in the countries where it is used. The current study investigates the psychometric(More)
