We have developed a simple and robust fluorescence based boronic-acid molecular sensor for determining the concentration of fluoride in water at environmentally significant levels. The simplicity of the method and the ability to measure fluoride in water between 0.1 and 1.5 ppm is particularly noteworthy given the WHO requirements for detecting levels of… (More)
Hydrogel spheres, fashioned from an operationally simple mould, that incorporate boronate units were shown to function as saccharide sensors.
Room temperature iodocyclisation of homoallylamines stereoselectively delivers functionalised 2-(iodomethyl)azetidine derivatives in high yield. Increasing reaction temperature from 20 °C to 50 °C switches the reaction outcome to realise the stereoselective formation of functionalised 3-iodopyrrolidine derivatives. It was shown that these pyrrolidines are… (More)
Dynamic covalent functionality has been acknowledged as a powerful tool for the construction of organised architectures, the reversible nature thermodynamically facilitates self-control and self-correction. The use of boronic acids complexation with diols and their congeners has already shown great promise in realising and developing reversible… (More)
The incorporation of specialised carbohydrate affinity ligand methacrylamido phenylboronic acid in polyacrylamide gels for fluorophore-assisted carbohydrate electrophoresis greatly improved the effective separation of saccharides that show similar mobilities in standard electrophoresis. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis using methacrylamido phenylboronic… (More)
The exciplex formation between a pyridinium boronic acid and phenyl group connected via a propylene linker can be monitored using fluorescence. Addition of pinacol affords a cyclic boronate ester with enhanced Lewis acidity that increases the strength of its cation-π stacking interaction causing a four-fold fluorescence enhancement.
Fluorescein isothiocyanate is treated with 3-aminophenylboronic acid to provide a fluorescently tagged boronic acid derivative which is used to assess Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) quenching upon boronate ester formation with a series of bespoke diol appended quenchers. Fluorescence spectroscopy comparison of quenching efficiency between… (More)
In this feature article the use of boronic acids to monitor, identify and isolate analytes within physiological, environmental and industrial scenarios is discussed. Boronic acids recognise diol motifs through boronic ester formation and interact with anions generating boronates, as such they have been exploited in sensing and separation protocols for diol… (More)
o-(N,N-Dialkylaminomethyl)arylboronate systems are an important class of compounds in diol-sensor development. We report results from a computational investigation of fourteen o-(N,N-dialkylaminomethyl)arylboronates using second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory. Geometry optimizations were performed at the MP2/cc-pVDZ level and followed by… (More)
A carbohydrate sensing "click-fluor" is reported which displays a nontypical binding preference with sample saccharides. That a fluorescent sensor is generated as a result of triazole formation (click reaction), rather than simply bringing the sensor and reporter units together via a triazole linkage, and the potential applicability of the wide range of… (More)
