The initiation of the morphogenesis of gustatory papillae is independent of innervation. To address the question of whether taste bud formation is associated with gustatory papilla morphogenesis, we examined developing tongues in mouse embryos from embryonic day 11 to birth. Despite the smooth morphological appearance of the lingual dorsal surface at 13(More)
A Phase Ib trial of bryostatin 1, a macrocyclic lactone and protein kinase C (PKC) activator, was conducted in patients with refractory nonhematological malignancies with the primary goal of determining whether down-regulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMNC) PKC activity could be achieved in vivo in humans. Patients (four patients/cohort)(More)
We have examined the mechanisms by which the multinuclear platinum chemotherapeutic BBR3610 kills human colon cancer cells. BBR3610 more efficiently killed HCT116, DLD1, SW480, and HT29 cells than BBR3464, cisplatin, or oxaliplatin. The amount of platinum uptake per cell and its incorporation into DNA were identical for BBR3464 and BBR3610. BBR3610(More)
PURPOSE This phase I study was conducted to identify the maximum-tolerated dose (MTD) of alvocidib when combined with vorinostat in patients with relapsed, refractory, or poor prognosis acute leukemia, or refractory anemia with excess blasts-2. Secondary objectives included investigating the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of the combination. (More)
BACKGROUND Researchers of sickle cell disease have traditionally used health care utilization as a proxy for pain and underlying vaso-occlusion. However, utilization may not completely reflect the amount of self-reported pain or acute, painful episodes (crises). OBJECTIVE To examine the prevalence of self-reported pain and the relationship among pain,(More)
BACKGROUND Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a chronic disease associated with high degrees of morbidity and increased mortality. Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among adults with sickle cell disease has not been widely reported. METHODS We administered the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form to 308 patients in the Pain in Sickle Cell Epidemiology(More)
Evidence for an analgesic interaction between delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta(9)-THC) and morphine was sought using an experimental pain model applied to normal volunteers. The study incorporated a double blinded, four treatment, four period, four sequence, crossover design. Subjects received Delta(9)-THC 5 mg orally or placebo and 90 min later morphine(More)
BACKGROUND Many studies have found gender differences in frequency and intensity of pain. Women often report lower pain thresholds, higher pain ratings, and lower tolerance for pain. People with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience both chronic and acute pain throughout life. OBJECTIVES To compare adult men and women with SCD in terms of reported pain,(More)
PURPOSE AND DESIGN Mechanism(s) by which the multikinase inhibitor sorafenib and the histone deacetylase inhibitor vorinostat interact to kill hepatic, renal, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells has been defined. RESULTS Low doses of sorafenib and vorinostat interacted in vitro in a synergistic fashion to kill hepatic, renal, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma(More)
Ten patients with ovarian cancer refractory to conventional therapy were treated with intraperitoneal (i.p.) recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) and lymphokine-activated killer cells (LAK). The 28-day protocol consisted of 6 priming i.p. rIL-2 infusions on days 0, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. Leukapheresis was performed for mononuclear cell collection on days 15, 16,(More)
