We have observed a Bose-Einstein condensate in a dilute gas of 4He in the (3)2S(1) metastable state. We find a critical temperature of (4.7+/-0.5) microK and a typical number of atoms at the threshold of 8 x 10(6). The maximum number of atoms in our condensate is about 5 x 10(5). An approximate value for the scattering length a = (16+/-8) nm is measured.(More)
Endogenous steroids and numerous environmental agents have potent effects on mammary development and carcinogenesis. Locally produced cytochrome P450 enzymes that modify such molecules are therefore likely to be important regulators of these processes. Here we describe the characterization of a novel mouse gene, termed Cyp2d22, that is highly expressed in(More)
A simultaneous measurement of the top-quark, W-boson, and neutrino masses is reported for tt events selected in the dilepton final state from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV. The analysis is based on endpoint determinations in kinematic distributions. When(More)
Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and multifocal micronodular pneumocyte hyperplasia (MMPH) produce cystic and nodular disease, respectively, in the lungs of patients with tuberous sclerosis. The objective of this study was to prospectively characterize the prevalence, clinical presentation, and genetic basis of lung disease in TSC. We performed genotyping and(More)
A measurement of total and fiducial inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 8 TeV is presented. Electron and muon final states are analyzed in a data sample collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.2 ± 0.5 pb(-1). The measured total inclusive cross sections times branching(More)
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and some of its immediate-early genes stimulate expression of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) long terminal repeat (LTR) sequences and the replication of HIV itself. To demonstrate this, the HIV LTR was linked to the indicator gene chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) and transfected into Vero cells with or(More)
Four lines of transgenic mice containing the HIV LTR linked to the bacterial gene encoding chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) were constructed. In each line, a characteristic tissue pattern of CAT expression was observed with detectable levels present in the eye, heart, spleen, thymus, and tail. Low levels of CAT were present in circulating(More)
Searches for the direct electroweak production of supersymmetric charginos, neutralinos, and sleptons in a variety of signatureswith leptons andW,Z, andHiggs bosons are presented. Results are based on a sample of protonproton collision data collected at center-of-mass energy √ s = 8TeV with the CMS detector in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity(More)
New sets of parameters (“tunes”) for the underlying-event (UE) modelling of the pythia8, pythia6 and herwig++Monte Carlo event generators are constructed using different parton distribution functions. Combined fits to CMS UE proton–proton (pp) data at √ s = 7 TeV and to UE proton–antiproton (pp) data from the CDF experiment at lower √ s, are used to study(More)
The second-order azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics, v2, are obtained in p-Pb and PbPb collisions over a wide pseudorapidity (η) range based on correlations among six or more charged particles. The p-Pb data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35  nb-1, were collected during the 2013 LHC p-Pb run at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of(More)
