OBJECTIVE Evaluate the association of perioperative hyperglycemia and postoperative infections (POI) in patients who had undergone general surgery. BACKGROUND Intensive glucose control leads to less postoperative infections (POI) in critically ill surgical patients, but the relationship of hyperglycemia and POI in a general surgical population remains(More)
A case is presented of meningeal melanocytoma that invaded the thoracic spinal cord of a 71-year-old woman. The light and electron microscopic features of the lesion indicate that it derives from melanocytes normally found in the leptomeninges. This tumor closely resembles the dermal cellular blue nevus and does not have the ultrastructure of a meningioma.(More)
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the gold standard procedure for gallbladder removal. However, conversion to open surgery is sometimes needed. The factors underlying a surgeon’s decision to convert a laparoscopic case to an open case are complex and poorly understood. With decreasing experience in open cholecystectomy, this procedure is however no(More)
Some patients with chronic arterial obstruction of the limbs may still suffer the consequences of advanced tissue ischemia, including ulceration and rest pain, and face threatened limb loss in spite of available surgical, pharmacologic, and other treatments. Additional therapeutic modalities were thus sought to accomplish limb salvage. A literature review(More)
Mouse plasmacytomas induced by pristane oil alone, or in combination with Abelson murine leukemia virus (A-MuLV), regularly carry one of three alternative chromosomal translocations that juxtapose c-myc to immunoglobulin heavy- or light-chain loci. E mu-c-myc transgenic mice develop translocation-free plasmacytomas after induction by pristane oil and/or(More)
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the gold standard procedure for gallbladder removal. Conversion to an open procedure is sometimes deemed necessary, especially in complex cases in which a prolonged laparoscopic operative time is anticipated. A prolonged LC case is thought to be associated with increased complications and cost and therefore(More)
BACKGROUND Emergency status adversely affects surgical outcomes. Predictors of increased morbidity of emergency general surgery are unknown. We determined predictors of postoperative complications of emergency general surgery. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study of Brigham and Women's Hospital American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality(More)
