Diosgenin (a steroidal saponin of yam) has long been used as a raw material for the industrial production of steroid drugs, and reported to have a hypocholesterolemic effect by suppressing cholesterol absorption and increasing cholesterol secretion. Oxidative stress has been suggested as a main risk factor in the development of atherosclerosis. The aim of(More)
In the process of screening for pancreatic lipase inhibitors, which could be used as an anti-obesity measure, the methanol extract of Dioscorea nipponica Makino powder (DP) appeared to have potent inhibitory activity against porcine pancreatic lipase with an IC50 value of 5-10 microg/ml, where the enzyme activity was assayed by using 4-methylumbelliferyl(More)
OBJECTIVES Technetium pertechnetate (TcO4) is a radioactive tracer used to assess thyroid function by thyroid uptake system (TUS). However, the TUS often fails to deliver accurate measurements of the percent of thyroid uptake (%thyroid uptake) of TcO4. Here, we investigated the usefulness of quantitative single-photon emission computed tomography/computed(More)
The prognosis of gastric cancer is generally determined by tumor depth and lymph node metastasis, while the effect of cross-sectional tumor location on prognosis remains unclear. This study recruited patients who had been diagnosed with gastric cancer and who underwent gastrectomy from 1989 to 2012. The cross-sectional locations of the gastric cancers were(More)
We studied 65 adult patients without a history of diabetes who were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis. Ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes was common (42%) among this group of Korean patients with new-onset diabetes presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis. These patients were younger, showed a greater defect in insulin secretion.
A proof-of-concept study is presented using dual gene therapy that employed a small hairpin RNA (shRNA) specific for mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and a herpes simplex virus-thymidine kinase (HSV-TK) gene to inhibit the growth of tumors. Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors containing a mutant TK gene (sc39TK) were transduced into HeLa(More)
Cystinuria is an inherited disorder characterized by defective renal reabsorption of cystine and dibasic amino acids leading to nephrolithiasis. This study was conducted to analyze the genotypes and phenotypes of pediatric patients with cystinuria. Eight children from Seoul National University Hospital and Asan Medical Center presenting with cystinuria from(More)
This study analyzed levels of parabens in commercial dentifrices and saliva. HPLC was performed using 35% acetonitrile and measuring absorbance at 254 nm. Thirteen toothpastes and five mouthwashes were analyzed. Of these, volunteers used three toothpastes and two mouthwashes, and levels of parabens were analyzed in saliva and water used for mouth rinsing.(More)
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate longitudinal gene expression patterns by retinal imaging using a modified custom-built confocal laser-scanning microscope in experimental rats after intravitreal injection of recombinant adeno-associated virus 2 (rAAV2-green fluorescent protein [GFP]). METHODS Ten 9-week-old Wistar rats were divided into(More)
BACKGROUND Fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs) have been widely used as a means of colorectal cancer screening. Automated FOBTs using immunologic principles have the advantages such as quantitation, high specificity, and high throughput. We evaluated a newly-introduced automated FOBT analyzer, OC-SENSOR neo (OC neo) (Eiken Chemical Co., Japan). METHODS The(More)
