Low antioxidant levels and oxidative stress due to airway inflammation may be determinant of asthma severity. The study was conducted to find the extent of lipid peroxidation and change in the levels of plasma iron in asthmatic patients with severity of disease. Study included 155 asthmatic and 156 healthy volunteers of the age groups 18-45 of either sex.… (More)
OBJECTIVES The neuromuscular transmission failure in acute organophosphate (OP) poisoning occurs because of the irreversible inactivation of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase located in the neuromuscular junction, and is distinguished neuroelectrophysiologically by single electrical stimulus-induced repetitive responses and either a decremental or a… (More)
Phrenic nerve conduction studies were performed within 48 h of admission and subsequently in 29 patients (14 of whom required mechanical ventilation) with acute organophosphate (OP) poisoning. The mean (+/-SD) amplitude of the diaphragmatic compound muscle action potential (CMAP) in patients requiring mechanical ventilation (119.09 +/- 173.85 microV) was… (More)
Two cases of Wegeners Granulomatosis were presented. In the both cases diffuse alveolar hemorrhage was found.
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) can commonly present as chylothorax and rarely as chylopericardium. Here we are presenting a case of a 21-years-old female with bilateral chylothorax, chylopericardium and chylous ascites all together finally diagnosed to have NHL as the etiology. To the best of our knowledge, it has been reported very infrequently.
CONTEXT Hand hygiene (HH) is the most important measure to prevent hospital-acquired infections but the compliance is still low. AIMS To assess the compliance, identify factors influencing compliance and to study the knowledge, attitude and perceptions associated with HH among health care workers (HCW). SETTINGS AND DESIGN Cross-sectional study… (More)
OBJECTIVE Pulmonary function abnormalities have been described in patients with chronic renal failure. There are very few longitudinal studies showing the effect of renal transplantation on pulmonary function. We aimed to study the effects of renal failure on pulmonary functions and to observe the changes following successful renal transplantation. … (More)
Serum lipids and lipoproteins of 50 active and passive smokers were compared with levels in 25 control subjects. Active smoking resulted in an increase in total cholesterol (Tc) and triglycerides (Tg) as compared to control group. The passive smokers also showed relatively higher levels but the effect was not significant. Active smoking raised the low… (More)
Tuberculosis is a very common disease often presenting in an uncommon form. High level of suspicion is required to diagnose it, thereby preventing its morbidity and mortality. We present a case of young female with multiple tuberculo-protein hypersensitivity reactions without any evidence of active tuberculosis in the body.
In industrialised countries, isocyanate is probably the most common cause of occupational asthma. The present study was conducted to see the effect on FEV1 in workers who were directly exposed to isocyanate. One hundred and fourteen workers of a rail coach factory who were involved in polyurethane paint spray were studied. Spirometry was done three times,… (More)
