Clinical relevance of the primary findings of the MTA: success rates based on severity of ADHD and ODD symptoms at the end of treatment.
- J. Swanson, H. Kraemer, M. Wu
- Medicine, PsychologyJournal of the American Academy of Child and…
- 1 February 2001
These secondary analyses confirm the primary findings and clarify clinical decisions about the choice between multimodal and unimodal treatment with medication.
The MTA at 8 years: prospective follow-up of children treated for combined-type ADHD in a multisite study.

Type or intensity of 14 months of treatment for ADHD in childhood does not predict functioning 6 to 8 years later, and early ADHD symptom trajectory regardless of treatment type is prognostic, implying that children with behavioral and sociodemographic advantage, with the best response to any treatment, will have the best long-term prognosis.
A 14-month randomized clinical trial of treatment strategies for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The MTA Cooperative Group. Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD.
- P. Jensen, L. E. Arnold, H. Kraemer
- Psychology, MedicineArchives of General Psychiatry
- 1 December 1999
The authors' carefully crafted medication management was superior to behavioral treatment and to routine community care that included medication for ADHD symptoms, and may have provided modest advantages for non-ADHD symptom and positive functioning outcomes.
ADHD comorbidity findings from the MTA study: comparing comorbid subgroups.
- P. Jensen, S. Hinshaw, B. Vitiello
- Psychology, MedicineJournal of the American Academy of Child and…
- 1 February 2001
Three clinical profiles are indicated, ADHD co-occurring with internalizing disorders (principally parent-reported anxiety disorders) absent any concurrent disruptive disorder (ADHD + ANX), ADHD Co-occurred with ODD/CD but no anxiety (AD HD + ODD /CD), and ADHD with both anxiety and O DD/CD may be sufficiently distinct to warrant classification as ADHD subtypes different from "pure" ADHD with neither comorbidity.
Self-perceptions of competence in children with ADHD and comparison children.
Examination by comorbidity subgroups revealed that children with ADHD inflated their self-perceptions the most in domains of greatest deficit, and gender effects also are reported.

Dopamine in drug abuse and addiction: results from imaging studies and treatment implications
- N. Volkow, J. Fowler, G. Wang, J. Swanson
- Psychology, BiologyMolecular Psychiatry
- 1 June 2004
It is postulate that decreased dopamine function in addicted subjects results in decreased sensitivity to nondrug-related stimuli (including natural reinforcers) and disrupts frontal inhibition, both of which contribute to compulsive drug intake and impaired inhibitory control.
Evidence of positive selection acting at the human dopamine receptor D4 gene locus
It is shown by DNA resequencing/haplotyping of 600 DRD4 alleles, representing a worldwide population sample, that the origin of 2R–6R alleles can be explained by simple one-step recombination/mutation events and the 7R allele originated as a rare mutational event that nevertheless increased to high frequency in human populations by positive selection.
Findings from the NIMH Multimodal Treatment Study of ADHD (MTA): Implications and Applications for Primary Care Providers
- P. Jensen, S. Hinshaw, T. Wigal
- Psychology, MedicineJournal of Developmental and Behavioral…
- 1 February 2001
Primary analyses revealed that Comb had a significant incremental effect over MedMgt (with a small effect size for this comparison) when categorical indicators of excellent response and when composite outcome measures were used.
Dopamine D4 receptor gene polymorphism is associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
- G. Lahoste, J. Swanson, J. Kennedy
- Psychology, BiologyMolecular Psychiatry
- 1 May 1996
The present findings suggest that polymorphic variation in the gene encoding the D4 dopamine receptor may be a contributing factor in the expression of symptoms associated with ADHD.
