Correlation of Pituitary Histomorphometry with Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone Response to Domperidone Administration in the Diagnosis of Equine Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction
Results suggest that horses with pituitary histologic grade ≥3 respond to domperidone with increased plasma ACTH concentration, and this should exacerbate the loss of dopaminergic inhibition in horses with PPID and increase the release of endogenous adrenocorticotrophic hormone by PI melanotrophs. Magnesium kinetics in adolescent girls determined using stable isotopes: effects of high and low calcium intake.
High calcium intake did not alter magnesium kinetics or balance in adolescent girls, and there was no significant difference between high and low calcium intakes for any of the parameters examined. Expand
Babesia odocoilei infection in elk.
Two male North American elk from a commercial herd were evaluated because of a sudden onset of lethargy, anorexia, and voiding of red urine, revealing anemia and intraerythrocytic parasites, later confirmed as Babesia odocoilei. Expand
Magnesium supplementation and osteoporosis.
Among other things, magnesium regulates active calcium transport. As a result, there has been a growing interest in the role of magnesium (Mg) in bone metabolism. A group of menopausal women wereExpand
Clostridium Chauvoei Myositis Infection in a Neonatal Calf
A 3-day-old 63-kg Simmental bull calf was presented to lected would have markedly decreased the chance of recovery the Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital with of the organism by culture.Expand
Ovariohysterectomy in six mares.
Six mares had ovariohysterectomy performed for chronic pyometra associated with cervical abnormalities, uterine neoplasia, or removal of a macerated fetus, and one mare was subsequently euthanatized. Expand
Effect of hypothyroidism on blood lipid concentrations in horses.
Examination of blood lipid concentrations of horses may be useful for detecting naturally acquired hypothyroidism, as markedly high VLDL concentration, appearance of TG-rich V LDL, increased serum concentrations of TG and TC, and decreased blood concentration of NEFA were evident. Expand
α-Melanocyte--stimulating hormone and adrenocorticotropin concentrations in response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone and comparison with adrenocorticotropin concentration after domperidone
It is suggested that ACTH concentration in response to TRH administration was useful for the diagnosis of PPID in horses and appeared more accurate than response to domperidone administration. Expand
Acute Pit Gas (Hydrogen Sulfide) Poisoning in Confinement Cattle
The history, clinical signs, and histologic lesion of cerebral laminar necrosis led to a diagnosis of H2S toxicosis in two steers brought to the Purdue Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for clinical evaluation, euthanasia, and necropsy. Expand
Serum triiodothyronine, total thyroxine, and free thyroxine concentrations in horses.
It was concluded that a TSH stimulation test should be performed when hypothyroidism is suspected and measurement of serum fT4 concentrations, by the single-stage radioimmunoassay, does not provide any additional information about thyroid gland function over that gained by measuring T4 concentrations.
