Gut inflammation provides a respiratory electron acceptor for Salmonella
It is shown that reactive oxygen species generated during inflammation react with endogenous, luminal sulphur compounds (thiosulphate) to form a new respiratory electron acceptor, tetrathionate, that allows the pathogen to use respiration to compete with fermenting gut microbes.

This review examines deoxyadenosylcobalamin (Ado-B12) biosynthesis, transport, use, and uneven distribution among living forms and suggests that the B12 synthetic pathway may have evolved to allow anaerobic fermentation of small molecules in the absence of an external electron acceptor.

A method has been devised for the rapid identification of nonsense mutations (UAG, UAA, UGA codons) in Salmonella by replica-printed onto lactose plates spread with lawns of tester strains containing nonsense mutations in the episomal Z gene.

A model is presented whereby the formation of gene clusters in bacteria is mediated by transfer of DNA within and among taxa, and predicts a mosaic structure of modern genomes in which ancestral chromosomal material is interspersed with novel, horizontally transferred operons providing peripheral metabolic functions.
