Green algae: Structure, reproduction, and evolution in selected genera
- J. Pickett-Heaps
PRIMARY ADHESION OF ENTEROMORPHA (CHLOROPHYTA, ULVALES) PROPAGULES: QUANTITATIVE SETTLEMENT STUDIES AND VIDEO MICROSCOPY 1
High‐resolution video microscopy was used for the first time to reveal details of the various stages in the settlement and adhesion of zoospores and zygotes, and density‐dependent spore adhesion effects not previously reported were revealed.
The cytoplast concept in dividing plant cells: cytoplasmic domains and the evolution of spatially organized cell.
- J. Pickett-Heaps, B. Gunning, R. C. Brown, B. Lemmon, A. Cleary
- BiologyAmerican journal of botany
- 1 February 1999
The unique cytokinetic apparatus of higher plant cells comprises two cytoskeletal systems: a predictive preprophase band of microtubules (MTs), which defines the future division site, and the…
Traction fibre: toward a "tensegral" model of the spindle.
It is argued that tensile forces act along the whole k-fibre, which, therefore, can be considered as a classic "traction fibre" and suggests that the spindle might originally have evolved as the mechanism by which a single tensegral unit is divided into two cytoplasts; use of thespindle for segregating chromosomes might represent a secondary, more recent development of this primary function.
VALVE MORPHOGENESIS IN THE PENNATE DIATOM NAVICULA CUSPIDATA 1
The deposition of siliceous valves during asexual reproduction of the pennate diatom, Navicula cuspidata Kütz., is described with emphasis on the cytoplasmic components involved. The events…
UV microbeam irradiations of the mitotic spindle. II. Spindle fiber dynamics and force production
- T. Spurck, O. Stonington, J. Snyder, J. Pickett-Heaps, A. Bajer, J. Molé-Bajer
- BiologyThe Journal of cell biology
- 1 October 1990
Metaphase and anaphase spindles in cultured newt and PtK1 cells were irradiated with a UV microbeam (285 nM), creating areas of reduced birefringence (ARBs) in 3 s that selectively either severed a…
A routine flat embedding method for electron microscopy of microorganisms allowing selection and precisely orientated sectioning of single cells by light microscopy
A simple method is described to embed material in resin, in the form of microscope slides, to observe it with high resolution light microscopy, to select, orient and section it for TEM. This method…
THE EFFECTS OF ISOPROPYL N-PHENYL CARBAMATE ON THE GREEN ALGA OEDOGONIUM CARDIACUM
It is suggested that isopropyl N-phenylcarbamate (IPC) prevents the assembly of microtubules, increases the number of functional polar bodies, and affects the orientation ofmicrotubules in O. cardiacum.
Preprophase microtubule bands in some abnormal mitotic cells of wheat.
- J. Pickett-Heaps
- BiologyJournal of cell science
- 1 March 1969
During formation of the stomatal complexes, preprophase microtubules were almost invariably found where expected, preceding abnormal development both in untreated and also in caffeine-treated material, regardless of the number, disposition or size of nuclei.
Chromosome motion and the spindle matrix
This paper considers mainly prometaphaseandanaphaseA movements, and believes the veryinfluential conclusions are incorrect, andsocurrent modelsofthespindle may befundamentallyflawed.
