Place navigation impaired in rats with hippocampal lesions
It is reported that, in addition to a spatial discrimination impairment, total hippocampal lesions also cause a profound and lasting placenavigational impairment that can be dissociated from correlated motor, motivational and reinforcement aspects of the procedure.
Phase relationship between hippocampal place units and the EEG theta rhythm
The phase was highly correlated with spatial location and less well correlated with temporal aspects of behavior, such as the time after place field entry, and the characteristics of the phase shift constrain the models that define the construction of place fields.
An oscillatory interference model of grid cell firing
It is proposed that the oscillatory interference mechanism proposed for the phase precession effect in place cells underlies the grid‐like firing pattern of dorsomedial entorhinal grid cells, and possible variations on the basic model are outlined, including the generation of grid-like firing via the interaction of multiple cells rather than via multiple dendritic subunits.
Geometric determinants of the place fields of hippocampal neurons
The identification of the environmental features controlling the location and shape of the receptive fields (place fields) of the place cells is reported, and a model in which the place field is formed by the summation of gaussian tuning curves.

The results suggest that place units were not responding to a simple sensory stimulus nor to a specific motor behavior, and are interpreted as strong support for the cognitive map theory of hippocampal function.
