CARNIVORES FROM THE LATE MIOCENE AND BASAL PLIOCENE OF THE TUGEN HILLS, KENYA
- J. Morales, M. Pickford, Dolores Soria, J. G. Abascal
- Environmental Science, Geography
- 2005
species of carnivores have been collected from the Late Miocene and early Pliocene sediments of the eastern foothills of the Tugen Hills (Lukeino and Mabaget Fms), Baringo District, Kenya. The sample…
Evidence for an African-Iberian mammal dispersal during the pre-evaporitic Messinian
The accurate timing of biogeographic dispersal can be determined by examining the age of fossiliferous strata on either side of a physical barrier. Here we show that African mammals migrated to…
Up-to-date Spanish continental Neogene synthesis and paleoclimatic interpretation

A synthesis of the Spanish continental Neogene is presented by designing an integrated correlative chart of the Neo "gen-e "succes"Siuns-ofthe "lberian-PeninsuIa-.…
Fossil camels from the upper miocene of Europe: Implications for biogeography and faunal change

Aspects of the functional morphology in the cranial and cervical skeleton of the sabre‐toothed cat Paramachairodus ogygia (Kaup, 1832) (Felidae, Machairodontinae) from the Late Miocene of Spain:…

The skull and cervical anatomy of the sabre-toothed felid Paramachairodus ogygia (Kaup, 1832) is described in this paper, with special attention paid to its functional morphology. Because of the…
Carnivores from the Middle Miocene Ngorora Formation (13-12 Ma), Kenya
- J. Morales, M. Pickford
- Environmental Science, Geography
- 30 December 2005
A new genus and species of bundont viverrid that is intermediate in size and morphology between Early Miocene Orangictis on the one hand and Plio-Pleistocene Pseudocivetta on the other appears to have been restricted to Africa.
Implications of the mastoid anatomy of larger extant felids for the evolution and predatory behaviour of sabretoothed cats (Mammalia, Carnivora, Felidae)

This study supports the inference by W. Akersten that the main muscles inserting in the mastoid process in sabretooths were those originating in the atlas, rather than those from the posterior neck, sternum and forelimb, and implies larger and longer-fibred atlanto-mastoid muscles than in pantherines.

- BiologyTransactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh…

A new genus and species of felid, Ginsburgsmilus napakensis, is described from Napak, Uganda and a close relationship is proposed between these two genera and the tribe Barbourofelini, the transition between the two being represented in the fossil record by Prosansanosmilus peregrinus Heizmann et al. 1980.
Giant bunodont Lutrinae from the Mio-Pliocene of Kenya and Uganda
- J. Morales, M. Pickford
- Geology

Three new species of bunodont otters are described from the Mio-Pliocene of East Africa. They are provisionally attributed to the genus Sivaonyx Pilgrim, 1931. The species described are Sivaonyx…
