Evolution of the karyotype and sex chromosome systems in basal clades of araneomorph spiders (Araneae: Araneomorphae)

The remarkable karyotype and sex chromosome system diversity allows us to distinguish four evolutionary lineages of basal araneomorphs and hypothesize about the ancestral karyotypes of araneomorphic spiders.

Analysis of polymerase dynamics in living Chinese hamster ovary cells using an established line that expresses the largest (catalytic) subunit of the polymerase (RPB1) tagged with the green fluorescent protein (GFP) shows this tagged polymerase to be fully functional.
Evolution of multiple sex chromosomes in the spider genus Malthonica (Araneae: Agelenidae) indicates unique structure of the spider sex chromosome systems

Ulastructural data on sex chromosome pairing in other spiders indicate that the homomorphic sex chromosome pair forms an integral part of the spider sex chromosome systems.

Phylogenetic systematics and evolution of the spider infraorder Mygalomorphae using genomic scale data

The first such analysis for the group within a strict phylogenetic framework shows that a sheet web is likely the plesiomorphic condition for mygalomorphs, as well as providing hints to the ancestral foraging behavior for all spiders.
Insights into the Meiotic Behavior and Evolution of Multiple Sex Chromosome Systems in Spiders

It is suggested that the specific behavior of the female sex chromosomes may have evolved to avoid the negative effects of duplicated X chromosomes on female meiosis, and the chromosome ends that ensure the association of sex chromosome pairs during meiosis may contain information for discriminating between homologous and homeologous X chromosomes and thus act to promote homologueous pairing.

Sex Chromosome Pairing and Extensive NOR Polymorphism in Wadicosa fidelis (Araneae: Lycosidae)
The obtained data indicate the rapid spread of NORs in the karyotype of W. fidelis, which was presumably caused by ectopic recombinations and subsequent hybridisations of individuals with different NOR genotypes that produced heterozygotes.
Karyotypes of central European spiders of the genera Arctosa, Tricca, and Xerolycosa (Araneae: Lycosidae)

- Biology
- 3 January 2011
Differences in karyotypes among Arctosa species indicate that the evolution of the karyotype in this genus involved auto- some translocations and size changes in the sex chromosomes.
