Checklist of the species in the subfamily Vespinae (Insecta : Hymenoptera : Vespidae)
A checklist of the species in the subfamily Vespinae is presented, including synonyms and distributional summaries. Sixty-seven extant species in four genera are treated as valid, with an additional…
Phylogeny of hornets: a total evidence approach (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Vespinae, Vespa)
The monophyly of the genus Vespa and the existence of a main clade excluding V. basalis and V. binghami are confirmed and the tropica group is supported; the affinis group is not supported; molecular data relate the previously unresolved V. orientalis to V. affinis + V. mocsaryana.

Growth of preemergence colonies and colony survivorship of an independent founding polistine wasp,Ropalidia fasciata, in the subtropics are described and rate of nest development (cells/day) is positively correlated with the number of attending foundresses.
Polybia, Paraphyly, and Polistine Phylogeny
A cladistic analysis of the subgenera of the paper wasp genus Polybia Lepeletier, and the other genera that construct phragmocyttarus nests, indicates paraphyly of Polybia in terms of the genus Synoecoides Ducke.

It is argued that as ant predation pressure diminishes towards the cooler regions, so does selection maintaining the behavioral sequence where foundress departure from the nest is preceded by rubbing behavior.
