New classification for the composite genus Aedes (Diptera: Culicidae: Aedini), elevation of subgenus Ochlerotatus to generic rank, reclassification of the other subgenera, and notes on certain…
- J. F. Reinert
- BiologyJournal of the American Mosquito Control…
- 1 September 2000
The proposed new generic classification provides better defined genera and a more natural arrangement of included taxa.
Phylogeny and classification of Aedini (Diptera: Culicidae), based on morphological characters of all life stages
- J. F. Reinert, R. Harbach, I. Kitching
- Biology
- 1 November 2004
Higher-level relationships within Aedini, the largest tribe of Culicidae, are explored using morphological characters of eggs, fourth-instar larvae, pupae, and adult females and males to recognize as genera those groups that are ‘weighting independent’.
Phylogeny and classification of tribe Aedini (Diptera: Culicidae)
- J. F. Reinert, R. Harbach, I. Kitching
- Biology
- 1 December 2009
The phylogeny and classification of tribe Aedini are delineated based on a cladistic analysis of 336 characters from eggs, fourth-instar larvae, pupae, adult females and males, and immature stage…
Phylogeny and classification of Ochlerotatus and allied taxa (Diptera: Culicidae: Aedini) based on morphological data from all life stages
- J. F. Reinert, R. Harbach, I. Kitching
- Biology
- 1 September 2006
The phylogenetic relationships and generic assignments of ‘Ochlerotatus’ and related taxa of uncertain taxonomic position in the classification of Aedini are explored using 297 characters from eggs, fourth-instar larvae, pupae, adults and immature habitat coded for 158 exemplar species.
Ribosomal DNA ITS2 Sequences Differentiate Six Species in the Anopheles crucians Complex (Diptera: Culicidae)
- R. Wilkerson, J. F. Reinert, Cong Li
- BiologyJournal of medical entomology
- 1 May 2004
Anopheles crucians Wiedemann was investigated for the presence of cryptic species using rDNA ITS2 sequences and found that all species could be identified with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using a mixture of four primers in a single reaction.
List of abbreviations for currently valid generic-level taxa in family Culicidae (Diptera).
- J. F. Reinert
- Biology
- 2009
All currently valid genera and subgenera in family Culicidae of order Diptera and proposed generic and subgeneric abbreviations are provided.
Analysis of the Anopheles (Anopheles) quadrimaculatus complex of sibling species (Diptera: Culicidae) using morphological, cytological, molecular, genetic, biochemical, and ecological techniques in…
- J. F. Reinert, P. Kaiser, J. Seawright
- BiologyJournal of the American Mosquito Control…
- 1 March 1997
The Anopheles quadrimaculatus complex of 5 cryptic species is analyzed using multiple techniques, including morphological, cytological, molecular, genetic, biochemical, and ecological procedures, and several new morphological features are described.
Tewarius reinert, a new genus of Aedini (Diptera: Culicidae)
- J. F. Reinert
- Biology
- 2006
A new genus, Tewarius Reinert, is described in tribe Aedini and the primary diagnostic characters of females, female genitalia, males, male genitalia, pupae, and fourth-instar larvae are provided.…
Laboratory blood feeding of Culicoides mississippiensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) through a reinforced silicone membrane.
- E. Davis, J. Butler, R. Roberts, J. F. Reinert, D. Kline
- Biology, MedicineJournal of medical entomology
- 30 March 1983
The preparation and use of a durable silicone membrane for feeding Culicoides mississippiensis in the laboratory are described and no significant differences were noted in mean number of eggs matured or in the percentage of egg hatch among females fed on a human host, defribrinated bovine blood, and citrated bovines blood.
Restoration of Ayurakitia to generic rank in tribe Aedini and a revised definition of the genus.
- J. F. Reinert
- BiologyJournal of the American Mosquito Control…
- 1 June 2000
Ayurakitia, previously treated as a subgenus of genus Aedes, is restored as a genus in tribe Aedini of family Culicidae and illustrations of the female and male genitalia, pupa, and 4th-stage larva of the type species are provided.
