Diversity of most fungal groups peaked in tropical ecosystems, but ectomycorrhizal fungi and several fungal classes were most diverse in temperate or boreal ecosystems, and manyfungal groups exhibited distinct preferences for specific edaphic conditions (such as pH, calcium, or phosphorus).
12 Orchid Mycorrhizas: Molecular Ecology, Physiology, Evolution and Conservation Aspects
- J. Dearnaley, F. Martos, M. Selosse
- Environmental Science
- 2012
This review is intended to provide an overview of contemporary approaches to studying orchid mycorrhizas and elaborates on what has been gleaned from these studies with regards to the ecology, physiology, evolution and conservation aspects of the association and highlights areas of the relationship that need further exploration.

Molecular identification studies of orchid-associated fungi indicate a wide range of fungi might be orchid mycobionts, show common fungal taxa across the globe and support the view that some orchids have specific fungal interactions.
Pterostylis nutans (Orchidaceae) has a specific association with two Ceratobasidium root-associated fungi across its range in eastern Australia
- M. Irwin, J. Bougoure, J. Dearnaley
- Environmental Science
- 6 August 2007
The results demonstrate that specificity for fungal partners occurs in P. nutans and reinforces the idea that conservation measures for endangered Australian orchids must include ex situ perpetuation of fungal symbionts as well as plant material.

It is shown that there is specificity for fungal partners within the orchid genera Acianthus, Caladenia and Pterostylis, and that the fungal endophytes isolated from the three Pterstylis species were probably Thanatephorus species.
