Deep-sea sponge grounds of the Flemish Cap, Flemish Pass and the Grand Banks of Newfoundland (Northwest Atlantic Ocean): Distribution and species composition
Data from trawl groundfish surveys cannot map the deep-sea sponge grounds to a precision less than the trawl distance of 1.5 nm, Nevertheless it has been used by the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization to implement the 61/105 United Nations General Assembly Resolution in closing six areas to bottom fishing activities to protect the sponge grounds of the NAFO Regulatory Area.

The combined whale-fall and wood-fall experiment provides support to the hypothesis that the Antarctic circumpolar current is a barrier to the larvae of deep-water species that are broadly distributed in other ocean basins.
Sediment drifts and cold-water coral reefs in the Patagonian upper and middle
A First Approach to Assess the Impact of Bottom Trawling Over Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems on the High Seas of the Southwest Atlantic
The Southwest Atlantic (SW Atlantic), corresponding to FAO Statistical Area 41, includes a total continental shelf area of approximately 1.96 million km2 of which a large portion lies off the…
Habitat characterization of deep-water coral reefs in La Gaviera canyon (Avilés Canyon System, Cantabrian Sea)
Namuncurá Marine Protected Area: an oceanic hot spot of benthic biodiversity at Burdwood Bank, Argentina
This contribution represents the most recent and complete checklist of benthic organisms (mainly mega and macrofauna) that summarized 240 taxa collected at three sites in the mentioned area and largely exceeds the values coming from other productive areas in Argentinean waters.
Seabed mapping for selecting cold-water coral protection areas on Hatton Bank, Northeast Atlantic
The approach was used to identify the bottom-trawl deep-sea fishery footprint on the western slope of Hatton Bank, to map the main fishing grounds and related deep- sea habitats, and to study the interactions between fisheries and cold-water corals.
Management Strategies to Limit the Impact of Bottom Trawling on VMEs in the High Seas of the SW Atlantic
For the past nine years, the issue of protecting biodiversity in the deep sea in areas beyond national jurisdiction – the high seas (HS) – has been widely debated by the United Nations General…
