The CKD-EPI creatinine equation is more accurate than the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study equation and could replace it for routine clinical use.
National Kidney Foundation Practice Guidelines for Chronic Kidney Disease: Evaluation, Classification, and Stratification
- A. Levey, J. Coresh, G. Eknoyan
- MedicineAnnals of Internal Medicine
- 15 July 2003
The goal is to disseminate the simple definition and five-stage classification system of Chronic kidney disease, to summarize the major recommendations on early detection of chronic kidney disease in adults, and to consider some of the issues associated with these recommendations.
Prevalence of chronic kidney disease in the United States.
The prevalence of CKD in the United States in 1999-2004 is higher than it was in 1988-1994 and this increase is partly explained by the increasing prevalence of diabetes and hypertension and raises concerns about future increased incidence of kidney failure and other complications.
Definition and classification of chronic kidney disease: a position statement from Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO).
- A. Levey, K. Eckardt, G. Eknoyan
- MedicineKidney International
- 1 June 2005
A survey and conference was conducted and a controversies conference was sponsored to provide a clear understanding to both the nephrology and nonnephrology communities of the evidence base for the definition and classification recommended by Kidney Disease Quality Outcome Initiative (K/DOQI).
Prevalence of chronic kidney disease and decreased kidney function in the adult US population: Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
- J. Coresh, B. Astor, T. Greene, G. Eknoyan, A. Levey
- MedicineAmerican Journal of Kidney Diseases
- 2003
CKD is common and warrants improved detection and classification using standardized criteria to improve outcomes, and CCr estimates showed a steeper decline with age and were lower in non-Hispanic blacks.
Kidney disease as a risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease: a statement from the American Heart Association Councils on Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease, High Blood Pressure Research,…
There was a high prevalence of CVD in CKD and that mortality due to CVD was 10 to 30 times higher in dialysis patients than in the general population, and the task force recommended that patients with CKD be considered in the “highest risk group” for subsequent CVD events.
Assessing kidney function--measured and estimated glomerular filtration rate.
- L. Stevens, J. Coresh, T. Greene, A. Levey
- MedicineNew England Journal of Medicine
- 8 June 2006
Current methods of measuring GFR and GFR-estimating equations and their strengths and weaknesses as applied to chronic kidney disease are considered.
Estimating glomerular filtration rate from serum creatinine and cystatin C.
The combined creatinine-cystatin C equation performed better than equations based on either of these markers alone and may be useful as a confirmatory test for chronic kidney disease.
Using Standardized Serum Creatinine Values in the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study Equation for Estimating Glomerular Filtration Rate
- A. Levey, J. Coresh, F. van Lente
- MedicineAnnals of Internal Medicine
- 15 August 2006
The MDRD Study equation has now been reexpressed for use with a standardized serum creatinine assay, allowing GFR estimates to be reported in clinical practice by using standardized serumcreatinine and overcoming this limitation to the current use of GFR estimating equations.
