Accelerated decline in the Arctic sea ice cover
- J. Comiso, Claire Parkinson, Robert Gersten, L. Stock
- Environmental Science
- 1 January 2008
Satellite data reveal unusually low Arctic sea ice coverage during the summer of 2007, caused in part by anomalously high temperatures and southerly winds. The extent and area of the ice cover…
Warming of the Antarctic ice-sheet surface since the 1957 International Geophysical Year
- E. Steig, D. Schneider, S. Rutherford, M. Mann, J. Comiso, D. Shindell
- Environmental ScienceNature
- 22 January 2009
It is shown that significant warming extends well beyond the Antarctic Peninsula to cover most of West Antarctica, an area of warming much larger than previously reported and suggested that neither can be attributed directly to increases in the strength of the westerlies.
Large Decadal Decline of the Arctic Multiyear Ice Cover
- J. Comiso
- Environmental Science
- 8 February 2012
AbstractThe perennial ice area was drastically reduced to 38% of its climatological average in 2007 but recovered slightly in 2008, 2009, and 2010 with the areas being 10%, 24%, and 11% higher than…
Arctic sea ice extents, areas, and trends, 1978-1996
- Claire Parkinson, D. Cavalieri, P. Gloersen, H. Zwally, J. Comiso
- Environmental Science
- 15 September 1999
Satellite passive-microwave data for November 1978 through December 1996 reveal marked seasonal, regional, and interannual variabilities, with an overall decreasing trend of −34,300±3700 km2/yr…
Variability and Trends in Antarctic Surface Temperatures from In Situ and Satellite Infrared Measurements
- J. Comiso
- Environmental Science
- 15 May 2000
Abstract The surface air temperatures observed from stations in Antarctica have been shown to have predominantly positive trends that are as high as 0.5°C decade−1 along the Antarctic Peninsula. To…
Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice, 1978-1987: Satellite Passive-Microwave Observations and Analysis
- P. Gloersen, W. Campbell, D. Cavalieri, J. Comiso, C. L. Parkinson, H. Zwally
- Environmental Science, Mathematics
- 1992
This book contains a description and analysis of the spatial and temporal variations in the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice covers from October 26, 1978 through August 20, 1987. It is based on data…
Trends in the sea ice cover using enhanced and compatible AMSR‐E, SSM/I, and SMMR data
[1] Arguably, the most remarkable manifestation of change in the polar regions is the rapid decline in the Arctic perennial ice cover. Changes in the global sea ice cover, however, have been more…
On the 2012 record low Arctic sea ice cover: Combined impact of preconditioning and an August storm
- Claire Parkinson, J. Comiso
- Environmental Science
- 16 April 2013
A new record low Arctic sea ice extent for the satellite era, 3.4 × 106 km2, was reached on 13 September 2012; and a new record low sea ice area, 3.0 × 106 km2, was reached on the same date.…
Observed Hemispheric Asymmetry in Global Sea Ice Changes
- D. Cavalieri, P. Gloersen, Claire Parkinson, J. Comiso, H. Zwally
- Environmental Science
- 7 November 1997
From November 1978 through December 1996, the areal extent of sea ice decreased by 2.9 ± 0.4 percent per decade in the Arctic and increased by 1.3 ± 0.2 percent per decade in the Antarctic. The…
