This paper presents results of an exploratory experimental study of the effects of interruptions on the execution of computerised clerical tasks, provides classification of interruption handling strategies, and gives some recommendations for the user interface design for frequently interrupted work conditions.
An airliner taxies onto the runway and the captain advances the throttles to take off. Suddenly, a loud alarm sounds, startling the two pilots and confusing them for a moment before they realize that the alarm is coming from the takeoff-configuration warning system. The captain retards the throttles and taxies off the runway. The pilots realize that they… (More)

Online air ticket booking is a cognitively complex task even on fully-functional internet-access devices such as desktops, representing a repetitive multi-parametric search in the flights database and then browsing long lists of flights found, consisting of different carriers, prices, dates and times, to create an optimal combination of outbound and inbound… (More)
In the past few years flat user interface design has become the predom‐ inating visual style of operating systems, websites and mobile apps. Although flat design has been widely criticized by HCI and usability experts, empirical research on flat design is still scarce. We present the results of an experimental comparative study of visual search… (More)

This paper presents the "bird's-eye-view" of the development and growth of HCI and usability within academia and industry in Russia. The paper also highlights the challenges facing Russian HCI and usability community.
The use of light and ultra-light fonts has become an omnipresent trend in the design of modern user interfaces. Although this trend has been criticized by a number of usability experts, no empirical research exists to date on the legibility of these fonts. We present the results of a preliminary eyetracking study showing that light and ultra-light fonts are… (More)
Nanocrystalline potassium polytitanates K2O·nTiO2·mH2O represent a new type of semiconducting compounds which are characterized by a high specific surface that makes them promising for use in gas sensors. In this work, we have studied potassium polytitanate mesoporous nanoparticle agglomerates placed over a SiO2/Si substrate equipped with multiple coplanar… (More)
