Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa, is several million years old. Lake levels have fluctuated to a considerable extent in the late Pleistocene. Although tectonism may have influenced…
AFRICAN CICHLID FISHES: Model Systems for Evolutionary Biology
This view provides the critical information needed to formulate and test hypotheses that may permit discrimination among the diverse theories and models that have been advanced to explain the evolution of these fishes.
Retention of an ancestral polymorphism in the Mbuna species flock (Teleostei: Cichlidae) of Lake Malawi
Results indicate that analysis of mtDNA alone will not be sufficient for resolution of phylogenetic relationships in the mbuna, and will require examination ofmultiple nuclear loci, because many of these new markers are also likely to retain ancestral polymorphisms.
Origin, diversification, and historical biogeography of the genus Trachurus (Perciformes: Carangidae).
Polygynandry inPseudotropheus zebra, a cichlid fish from Lake Malawi
The observed degree of multiple paternity strongly suggests that females are free to choose mates as they will, a prerequisite of many theories positing sexual selection as a key element in Malawi chichlid evolution.
Hybrid origin of a cichlid population in Lake Malawi: implications for genetic variation and species diversity
Genetic evidence of a natural hybrid cichlid population with a unique colour phenotype and elevated levels of genetic variation is provided and it is proposed that the role of hybridization in generating both genetic variability and species diversity of Lake Malawicichlids warrants further consideration.
RateMyProfessors com versus formal in-class student evaluations of teaching
Using data for 426 instructors at the University of Maine, we examined the relationship between RateMyProfessors.com (RMP) indices and formal in-class student evaluations of teaching (SET). The two…

- 1 July 1982
The results of complementary studies of genetics and reproductive biology initiated to resolve the biological status of cichlids of Cuatro Cienegas suggest that both forms belong to a single polymorphic species.
