Photosynthetic algae and cyanobacteria have been proposed for producing biofuels through a direct photoconversion process. To accelerate the efforts of discovering and screening microbes for biofuel production, sensitive and high throughput methods to measure photosynthetic activity need to be developed. Here we report the development of new ratiometric(More)
Vitiligo is a skin depigmentation disorder with an increasing prevalence. Among recognized mechanisms is the oxidative stress that affects melanocytes which are responsible for skin pigmentation. Studies have shown that high concentration of hydrogen peroxide, or H2O2, induces apoptotic activities. Few studies have been done with lower doses of H2O2. Using(More)
Ecthyma gangrenosum (EG) involves necrotic cutaneous lesions caused by bacteria, mainly Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and is usually seen in immunocompromised patients with septicemia. However, clinically similar infections have been published with fungi as etiologic agents. We present a case of an EG-like lesion due to Fusarium oxysporum confirmed by clinical(More)
The nonlinear optical properties of methyl red (MR) doped PMMA film are measured. The self-diffraction of the film at 441.6nm and at 535nm is investigated respectively, and the results indicate it possesses high quality of optical limiting. The lasers of 441.6nm and 535nm can all induce thermal self-defocusing effects in the film.
