High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a nuclear factor that is released extracellularly as a late mediator of lethality in sepsis as well as after necrotic, but not apoptotic, death. Here we demonstrate that in contrast to the delayed role of HMGB1 in the systemic inflammation of sepsis, HMGB1 acts as an early mediator of inflammation and organ damage in(More)
BACKGROUND Subepithelial fibrosis is a cardinal feature of bronchial asthma. Collagen I, III, and V; fibronectin; and tenascin-C are deposited in the lamina reticularis. Extensive evidence supports the pivotal role of IL-4 and IL-13 in subepithelial fibrosis; however, the precise mechanism remains unclear. We have previously identified the POSTN gene(More)
Historically speaking, the diagnosis of primary osteoporosis was performed mainly by radiographic methods [1–3]. Recently, bone mineral density (BMD) measurement has become available and in 1994, the World Health Organization (WHO) proposed new diagnostic criteria of this disease based on the BMD values [4]. Because the BMD values used in the WHO diagnostic(More)
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a paclitaxel-eluting balloon (PEB) for the treatment of sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) restenosis. BACKGROUND Because drug-eluting stents (DES) are being used in increasingly complicated settings, DES restenosis is no longer an uncommon phenomenon, and its optimal treatment is unknown. (More)
p21(Cip1/WAF1) has cell cycle inhibitory activity by binding to and inhibiting both cyclin/Cdk kinases and proliferating cell nuclear antigen. Here we show that p21(Cip1/WAF1) is induced in the cytoplasm during the course of differentiation of chick retinal precursor cells and N1E-115 cells. Ectopic expression of p21(Cip1/WAF1) lacking the nuclear(More)
To test whether gaps resulting from sequence alignment contain phylogenetic signal concordant with those of base substitutions, we analyzed the occurrence of indel mutations upon a well-resolved, substitution-based tree for three nuclear genes in bumble bees (Bombus, Apidae: Bombini). The regions analyzed were exon and intron sequences of long-wavelength(More)
Spring queens of Bombus cryptarum and B. magnus from 2 localities in Brandenburg/Germany and Scotland/United Kingdom respectively were determined by morphological characteristics. The lateral border of the collare at the border of the pronotallobus or at the episternum proved to be an especially useful character. Artificial colonies were reared from safely(More)
We clarified the modulating action of the endocannabinoid system, and its possible mediation by the arachidonic acid cascade, on the reinstatement of methamphetamine (METH)-seeking behavior, using the intravenous self-administration paradigm in rats. Following 12 days of self-administration of METH, the replacement of METH with saline resulted in a gradual(More)
Expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta) is increased following the nervous system injury. Generally IL-1beta induces inflammation, leading to neural degeneration, while several neuropoietic effects have also been reported. Although neurite outgrowth is an important step in nerve regeneration, whether IL-1beta takes(More)
Artemisinin production by hairy roots of Artemisia annua L. was increased 6-fold to 1.8 μg mg−1 dry wt over 6 days by adding 150 mg chitosan l−1. The increase was dose-dependent. Similar treatment of hairy roots with methyl jasmonate (0.2 mM) or yeast extract (2 mg ml−1) increased artemisinin production to 1.5 and 0.9 μg mg−1 dry wt, respectively.
