We analyzed mRNA expression of the flt3 gene in 30 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 50 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), expression of flt3 was observed in 61 patients; 22 (73%) with AML and 39 (78%) with ALL. Among these, five patients with AML (one M2, two M4, and two M5)(More)
Deterioration in the quality of mammalian oocytes during the metaphase-II arrest period is well known as "oocyte aging." Oocytes in which aging has occurred are called aged oocytes, and these oocytes show enhanced activation and higher fragmentation rates after parthenogenetic activation. Previously we showed that porcine aged oocytes had low(More)
Tyrosine kinase 2 (Tyk2) is a nonreceptor tyrosine kinase that belongs to the Janus kinase (Jak) family. Here we identified a homozygous Tyk2 mutation in a patient who had been clinically diagnosed with hyper-IgE syndrome. This patient showed unusual susceptibility to various microorganisms including virus, fungi, and mycobacteria and suffered from atopic(More)
Chromosome aberrations, genomic instability, and cancer predisposition are hallmarks of a number of syndromes in which the defective genes recognize and/or repair DNA damage or are involved in some aspect of DNA processing. We report here direct interaction between BLM, mutated in Bloom's Syndrome (BS), and ATM, mutated is ataxia-telangiectasia, and we have(More)
In order to investigate the preparatory modulations of cortico-spinal excitability, reaction time (RT) methods were combined with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the motor cortex. We analyzed the variations in the amplitude of motor potentials evoked in a prime mover (flexor digitorum sublimis) by TMS delivered during the foreperiod of a visual(More)
The influence of prolonged storage of boar epididymides on post-thaw sperm motility, and in vitro fertilization was evaluated. Twenty pairs of epididymides were obtained from Large White boars, and spermatozoa from one of each of the pairs were immediately collected and frozen (control group). The remaining epididymides were cooled to 4 degrees C and stored(More)
IL-12 is a cytokine that induces Th1-derived cytokines (interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and IL-2). The significance of IL-12 in human autoimmunity is no clear, and the serum levels of IL-12 in SLE are not clearly established. Therefore, we examined the levels of IL-12 in 39 patients with active SLE, with sandwich ELISA. The levels of IL-12 in patients were(More)
We describe 2 patients with adult-onset type II citrullinemia who developed transient hypoproteinemia and jaundice in early infancy. Liver histology showed a marked fatty change and fibrosis. After the patients had lived without symptoms to the ages of 5 and 16 years, respectively, the diagnosis was made by genetic analysis.
A novel cDNA clone designated as HS1, which show an expression pattern limited to human hematopoietic cells, was isolated. About 2kb mRNA of the clone was accumulated in all the mature and immature lymphoid and myeloid cell lines tested, and two of three erythroblastoid cell lines, but not in any cell lines of non-hematopoietic tissues. The same mRNA was(More)
Immunity to mycobacterial infection is closely linked to the emergence of T cells that secrete cytokines, gamma interferon (IFN-gamma), interleukin-12 (IL-12), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), resulting in macrophage activation and recruitment of circulating monocytes to initiate chronic granuloma formation. The cytokine that mediates macrophage(More)
