Lipoprotein particles are required for Hedgehog and Wingless signalling
- D. Panáková, H. Sprong, E. Marois, C. Thiele, S. Eaton
- BiologyNature
- 5 May 2005
It is shown that Wingless, Hedgehog and glycophosphatidylinositol-linked proteins copurify with lipoprotein particles, and co-localize with them in the developing wing epithelium of Drosophila.
Identification of Zoonotic Genotypes of Giardia duodenalis
- H. Sprong, S. Cacciò, J. V. D. van der Giessen
- BiologyPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases
- 1 December 2009
Although the zoonotic potential of G. duodenalis is evident, evidence on the contribution and frequency is (still) lacking, and this newly developed molecular database has the potential to tackle intricate epidemiological questions concerning protozoan diseases.
Driving forces for changes in geographical distribution of Ixodes ricinus ticks in Europe
- J. Medlock, K. Hansford, W. Van Bortel
- Environmental ScienceParasites & Vectors
- 2 January 2013
Improved tick surveillance with harmonized approaches for comparison of data enabling the follow-up of trends at EU level will improve the messages on risk related to tick-borne diseases to policy makers, other stake holders and to the general public.
Pre- and post-Golgi translocation of glucosylceramide in glycosphingolipid synthesis
- D. Halter, S. Neumann, H. Sprong
- Biology, ChemistryJournal of Cell Biology
- 8 October 2007
Overall, it is shown that newly synthesized GlcCer enters two pathways: one toward the noncytosolic surface of a post-Golgi membrane and one via the ER toward the Golgi lumen LacCer synthase.
How proteins move lipids and lipids move proteins
It is described here how the distribution of lipids is directed by proteins, and, conversely, how lipids influence the distribution and function of proteins.

The organizing potential of sphingolipids in intracellular membrane transport.
- J. Holthuis, T. Pomorski, R. Raggers, H. Sprong, G. van Meer
- Biology, ChemistryPhysiological Reviews
- 10 January 2001
This review ascribes the sorting power of the Golgi to its capability to act as a distillation apparatus for sphingolipids and cholesterol, and hypothesize that by this mechanism, the composition of the sphingoipid domains, and the surrounding membrane changes along the cis-trans axis.
