Crystal structure of the human centromeric nucleosome containing CENP-A
- H. Tachiwana, W. Kagawa, H. Kurumizaka
- Biology, ChemistryNature
- 11 August 2011
The structure provides the first atomic-resolution picture of the centromere-specific nucleosome, and it is revealed that CENP-A contains two extra amino acid residues in the loop 1 region, which is completely exposed to the solvent.
Proviral silencing in embryonic stem cells requires the histone methyltransferase ESET
- T. Matsui, D. Leung, Y. Shinkai
- BiologyNature
- 17 February 2010
It is proposed that a DNA-methylation-independent pathway involving KAP1 and ESET/ESET-mediated H3K9me3 is required for proviral silencing during the period early in embryogenesis when DNA methylation is dynamically reprogrammed.
Kinetics of Core Histones in Living Human Cells
The results reveal that the inner core of the nucleosome is very stable, whereas H2B on the surface of active nucleosomes exchanges continually, unlike H3-GFP and H4-G FP, which are commonly thought to represent transcriptionally active chromatin.

Survivin Reads Phosphorylated Histone H3 Threonine 3 to Activate the Mitotic Kinase Aurora B
- Alexander E. Kelly, Cristina Ghenoiu, J. Z. Xue, C. Zierhut, H. Kimura, H. Funabiki
- Biology, ChemistryScience
- 8 October 2010
It is demonstrated that histone H3 phosphorylated at threonine 3 is directly recognized by an evolutionarily conserved binding pocket in the BIR domain of Survivin, which is a member of the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC).

DNA Damage-Dependent Acetylation and Ubiquitination of H2AX Enhances Chromatin Dynamics
- T. Ikura, S. Tashiro, K. Kamiya
- Biology, ChemistryMolecular and Cellular Biology
- 20 August 2007
It is shown that ionizing irradiation induces TIP60 acetylation of histone H2AX, a variant form of H2A known to be phosphorylated following DNA damage, and ubiquitination via the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme UBC13, which is induced by DNA damage.
Broad chromosomal domains of histone modification patterns in C. elegans.
- T. Liu, A. Rechtsteiner, X. Liu
- BiologyGenome Research
- 1 February 2011
The genome-wide distributions of 19 histone modifications, one histone variant, and eight chromatin-associated proteins in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos and L3 larvae are defined, allowing for in-depth analysis of the organization and deployment of the C. elegans genome during development.
G-quadruplex structures mark human regulatory chromatin
- Robert Hänsel-Hertsch, D. Beraldi, S. Balasubramanian
- BiologyNature Genetics
- 12 September 2016
The development of G4 ChIP–seq, an antibody-based G4 chromatin immunoprecipitation and high-throughput sequencing approach, shows that regulatory, nucleosome-depleted chromatin and elevated transcription shape the endogenous human G4 DNA landscape.
G9a/GLP complexes independently mediate H3K9 and DNA methylation to silence transcription
- M. Tachibana, Y. Matsumura, Mikiko Fukuda, H. Kimura, Y. Shinkai
- Biology, ChemistryEMBO Journal
- 22 October 2008
This work has provided the first clear evidence that G9a/GLP suppresses transcription by independently inducing both H3K9 and DNA methylation.
