Helgoland Roads, North Sea: 45 Years of Change
- K. Wiltshire, Alexandra C. Kraberg, A. Wichels
- Environmental Science
- 1 March 2010
The Helgoland Roads time series is one of the richest temporal marine data sets available, and detailed data provide the basis for long-term analyses of changes on many trophic levels at HelGoland Roads.
Reproduction of the Syllidae (Annelida: Polychaeta)
- H. Franke
- BiologyHydrobiologia
- 2004
This paper gives a survey of the various reproductive modes in syllids, with special reference to recent results, and focuses on the mechanisms of environmental and physiological control of sexual reproduction.
Ecological long-term research at Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea): retrospect and prospect—an introduction
- H. Franke, F. Búchholz, K. Wiltshire
- Environmental ScienceHelgoland Marine Research
- 26 November 2004
This paper summarizes and evaluates ecological long-term observations at the island of Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea) and represents a valuable basis for analysing past changes, evaluating the present status and predicting future changes in ecosystem parameters.
Purification and properties of cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase from higher plants involved in lignin biosynthesis

Long-term changes in the macrozoobenthos around the rocky island of Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea)
The paper briefly summarizes what is known about long-term changes in the macrozoobenthos of intertidal and subtidal hard-bottom communities around the island of Helgoland and considers southern species which may be considered as indicators of a warming trend.
Potential impact of climate warming on the recruitment of an economically and ecologically important species, the European lobster (Homarus gammarus) at Helgoland, North Sea
- I. Schmalenbach, H. Franke
- Environmental Science
- 4 February 2010
It is hypothesize that an ongoing warming of the North Sea will strongly affect the recruitment success of the Helgoland lobster, mainly resulting from a decoupling of the seasonal peak appearance of larvae from optimal external conditions (temperature, food availability) for larval development.
On a clocklike mechanism timing lunar-rhythmic reproduction inTyposyllis prolifera (Polychaeta)
- H. Franke
- BiologyJournal of Comparative Physiology
- 1 July 1985
Entrainment of cyclic sexual development (and ultimately stolonial swarming) to the lunar cycle has been demonstrated both in the field and in experimental conditions.
The Role of Light and Endogenous Factors in the Timing of the Reproductive Cycle of Typosyllis prolifera and some other Polychaetes
- H. Franke
- Biology
- 1 May 1986
The exogenous and endogenous mechanisms of reproductive timing in T. prolifera are compared with those recently reported in some other polychaete species.
The recent arrival of the oceanic isopodIdotea metallica Bosc off Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea): an indication of a warming trend in the North Sea?
In 1988 a long-term study was started of the isopod fauna associated with surface drift material off Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea). In the summer of 1994 specimens ofIdotea metallica Bosc were…
Endocrine mechanisms mediating light-temperature effects on male reproductive activity inTyposyllis prolifera (polychaeta, syllidae)
- H. Franke
- BiologyWilhelm Roux's archives of developmental biology
- 1 March 1983
The experimental evidence of a hierarchic neuroendocrine system governing reproductive activity in syllid polychaetes is discussed, and a previously unknown prostomial hormone was found to play a major role in this process.
