Matrix Metalloproteinase-3: A Novel Signaling Proteinase from Apoptotic Neuronal Cells That Activates Microglia
- Yoon-Seong Kim, Sung Soo Kim, T. Joh
- Biology, ChemistryJournal of Neuroscience
- 6 April 2005
The results strongly suggest that the distinctive signal of neuronal apoptosis is the release of active form of MMP-3 that activates microglia and subsequently exacerbates neuronal degeneration in degenerative human brain disorders, such as Parkinson's disease.
Dopaminergic cell death induced by MPP+, oxidant and specific neurotoxicants shares the common molecular mechanism

The high throughput cDNA microarray screening using the current model identified downstream response genes, such as heme oxygenase‐1, a constituent of Lewy bodies, that can be the useful biomarkers to monitor the pathological conditions of dopaminergic neurons under neurotoxic insult.

Phenotypic Differentiation during Migration of Dopaminergic Progenitor Cells to the Olfactory Bulb
Results indicate that DA phenotypic determination is specific to a subset of mobile OB progenitors that originate in the anterior subventricular zone and reach the OB through the rostral migratory stream.
A fibrinolytic enzyme from the medicinal mushroom Cordyceps militaris.
- Jae-Sung Kim, K. Sapkota, Sung-jun Kim
- BiologyJournal of Microbiology
- 1 December 2006
The data present suggest that the fibrinolytic enzyme derived from the edible and medicinal mushroom Cordyceps militaris has fibrin binding activity, which allows for the local activation of thefibrin degradation pathway.
BCH, an inhibitor of system L amino acid transporters, induces apoptosis in cancer cells.
- C. Kim, Seon-Ho Cho, Do Kyung Kim
- Biology, ChemistryBiological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin
- 1 June 2008
The results suggest that the inhibition of LAT1 activity by BCH leads to apoptotic cancer cell death by inducing intracellular depletion of neutral amino acids necessary for cancer cell growth.
