The purpose of the present article is to outline the key elements in the way that prokaryotes are characterized, with a view to providing an overview of some of the pitfalls commonly encountered in taxonomic papers.

Cohnella thermotolerans gen. nov., sp. nov., and classification of 'Paenibacillus hongkongensis' as Cohnella hongkongensis sp. nov.

On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, in combination with chemotaxonomic data, strains CCUG 47242T and HKU3 represent two novel species of a new genus of endospore-forming bacteria for which the names Cohnella thermotolerans gen. nov. and Cohnella hongkongensis sp.nov are proposed.

Discrimination of Members of the Family Pasteurellaceae Based on Polyamine Patterns

The data demonstrate that polyamine patterns are useful for discrimination within the family Pasteurellaceae and confirmed the findings of Dewhirst et al. ( 1993) that H. parainfluenzae is phylogenetically only distantly related to the type species of the genus Haemphilus, Haemophilus influenzae.
