Blubber and buoyancy: monitoring the body condition of free-ranging seals using simple dive characteristics
A mechanistic model based on body compositions and morphometrics measured in the field, published values for the density of seawater and various body components, and values of drag coefficients for objects of different shapes was used to examine the theoretical relationships between drift rate and body composition and carried out a sensitivity analysis to quantify errors and biases caused by varying model parameters. The Diving Behaviour of Adult Male and Female Southern Elephant Seals, Mirounga leonina (Pinnipedia : Phocidae)
The diving behaviour of southern elephant seals is related to the possible prey they exploit in the Southern Ocean. Expand
Origins and Biological Accumulation of Small Plastic Particles in Fur Seals from Macquarie Island
It is hypothesized that the plastic particles recovered from the scats of fur seals on Macquarie Island were washed out to sea and then selected by size and consumed by individuals of a pelagic fish species, Electrona subaspera, who in turn were consumed by the fur seals. Expand
Molecular population genetics of the southern elephant seal Mirounga leonina.
Southern elephant seals breed on sub-Antarctic islands and have a circumpolar distribution. We assayed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA) variation in the three main populations in theExpand
The diet of Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella (Peters) during the breeding season at Heard Island
Trial fishing around Heard Island indicates that one of the major dietary items of the seals ( C. gunnari ) is of probable commercial importance and therefore any plans for the establishment of a fishery on Heard Island grounds must be considered in this light. Expand
Chemistry, occurrence and biological effects of saturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids associated with endophyte-grass interactions
Abstract Saturated amino pyrrolizidine alkaloids with an oxygen bridge between C-2 and C-7 have been isolated from grasses and the chemistry and biology of these substances are reviewed in thisExpand
Antarctic saline lakes—stable isotopic ratios, chemical compositions and evolution
Abstract About 90 saline and fresh water lakes as well as glaciers and their melt waters from the ice-free areas of the Soya Coast, the Vestfold Hills and the Southern Victoria Land of AntarcticaExpand
Halobacterium lacusprofundi sp. nov., a Halophilic Bacterium Isolated from Deep Lake, Antarctica
The strains were not proteolytic, did not produce acids from sugars, but utilized a wide range of carbon sources including sugars, alcohols, and organic acids for growth, and grew at 4°C, albeit very slowly. Expand
Population status, trends and a re-examination of the hypotheses explaining the recent declines of the southern elephant seal Mirounga leonina
An analysis of the relationship between log variance and log abundance for populations of southern and northern elephant seals suggests that interspecific competition is not a significant factor in the decline of the southern elephant seal. Expand
Resource partitioning through oceanic segregation of foraging juvenile southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina)
It is suggested that modifications of haul-out timing and behavior enable them to exploit a patchy and unpredictable environment to avoid intra-specific competition for resources on land, space on beaches, and at-sea foraging areas. Expand
