Reproductive behaviour ofNereis diversicolor (Annelida: Polychaeta)
- H. Bartels-Hardege, E. Zeeck
- Environmental Science, Biology
- 1 October 1990
Results indicated that maturation was induced by temperatures above 6°C; spawning in early spring was synchronized by raising temperatures after a period of low temperatures in winter, and occurred mainly at new and full moon.
Sex pheromone in a marine polychaete: Determination of the chemical structure
- E. Zeeck, J. Hardege, H. Bartels-Hardege, G. Wesselmann
- Biology, Chemistry
- 1 June 1988
A sex pheromone of the marine polychaete Platynereis dumerilii is chemically characterized as 5-methyl-3-heptanone, which shows a close relationship to insect phersomones and is of interest with regard to the evolution of pherOMones.
Identification of a female sex pheromone in Carcinus maenas
- J. Hardege, H. Bartels-Hardege, Ralf Bublitz
- Biology
- 31 August 2011
The identification of a nucleotide pheromone in crus- taceans will enable future studies on signal specificity, biological function, biosynthesis, reception, and evolution as well as focus its potential use in pest control and aquaculture, thus allowing for a major expansion of crustacean chemical and behavioral ecology research that was hindered by the lack of structural knowledge.
Chemical Signal Mediated Premating Reproductive Isolation in a Marine Polychaete, Neanthes acuminata (Arenaceodentata)
- R. Sutton, E. Bolton, H. Bartels-Hardege, M. Eswards, D. Reish, J. Hardege
- BiologyJournal of Chemical Ecology
- 21 July 2005
Aggressive behavior was induced by exposure of animals to seawater “conditioned” by individuals from the other populations, thus demonstrating the role of olfaction in the detection of “home” populations and establishing that individuals can recognize and discriminate among different populations of N. acuminata on the basis of o aroma cues.

Sex pheromones in a marine polychaete: Biologically active compounds from female Platynereis dumerilii
- E. Zeeck, J. Hardege, H. Bartels-Hardege, A. Willig, G. Wesselmann
- Biology, Chemistry
- 1 October 1991
A sex pheromone from Platynereis dumerilii females was extracted from the coelomic fluid of ripe heteronereids by a closed loop stripping technique. It was identified by coupled gas chromatography…

Timing of reproduction in marine polychaetes: The role of sex pheromones
- J. Hardege, C. Muller, M. Beckmann, H. Bartels-Hardege, M. Bentley
- Biology, Environmental Science
- 1998
The function of sex pheromones in nereid polychaetes and their role in the timing of reproduction in relation to other environmental cues are discussed.
Induction of swarming ofNereis succinea
- J. Hardege, H. Bartels-Hardege, E. Zeeck, F. Grimm
- Geology
- 1 June 1990
Nereis succinea (Frey and Leuckart, 1847), collected in 1987 from the Weser estuary, FRG, was exposed to different temperatures in the laboratory and metamorphosis to heteronereid stages was induced by raising temperatures around the time of the new moon.
