A preliminary checklist of the ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of Iran

The first checklist of the ants of Iran is presented, based on a comprehensive review of literature and the examination of material from collections and from several museums and institutions of different European countries, which suggests that the total species richness in Iran is essentially higher.

The monophyly of the tribe Oxyptilini and phylogenetic relationships of the genera embraced in this tribe were examined using 171 characters of adult morphology and a majority of the recovered synapomorphic characters have previously been used in the taxonomy of the subfamily.
