High-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry combined with chemometric methods were used to allow the fast and accurate identification and quantification of the flavonoids compounds in Gleditsiae Spina, and a classification model was built which showed a high level of accuracy predicting 100% of the samples, correctly.

The results showed that all of the samples were correctly classified both in partial least squares discriminant analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis based on the four compounds (caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, salvianolic acid B, and salvianolics acid A).
