Literature data concerning the biology and differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have become huge in less than 10 years, although some of these data still remain contradictory. MSCs seem to be a very promising tool for cell therapy because of their peculiar characteristics, which mimic partially those of embryonic stem cells, but with(More)
BACKGROUND Transfusional iron overload is a frequent finding in long-term survivors of acute leukemia (AL). Only a few studies have reported the results of iron depletion therapy in this category of patients. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Between January 1996 and July 2003, 26 consecutive adult patients who achieved complete remission of AL and developed(More)
There is evidence suggesting that Dysbindin (DTNBP1) is a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia in Caucasian, Chinese, and Japanese populations. We sought to determine if dysbindin was associated with schizophrenia and its symptoms in a representative group of schizophrenic patients from a Community-Based Mental Health Service (CMHS) in Verona, Italy. A(More)
BACKGROUND Allogeneic human skin removed from cadaveric donors is the covering of choice for deep burns, since it accelerates the re-epithelialisation of autologous skin. In this study we evaluated the cellular viability of cryopreserved skin at the regional tissue bank of Verona (Italy). METHODS From 1st June 2007 to 30th September 2007, tests of(More)
BACKGROUND Preoperative autologous blood donation (PABD) aims at avoiding the risks associated with exposure to allogeneic blood. While its use is extremely common among adult patients in connection with elective surgery, it is still uncommon in elderly patients, because of a series of coexisting pathologies. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS A retrospective study(More)
Intraoral bone defects may be treated using autologous grafts, homologous grafts, heterologous grafts or synthetic products. Autologous bone is now considered the gold standard for bone grafting procedures. Homologous fresh frozen bone, provided by bone banks, is frequently utilized by orthopaedic surgeons because it is considered a safe material from(More)
Between 1992 and 1999, 105 unrelated allogeneic bone marrow collections from 103 volunteer donors (65 males and 38 females; median age 33 years) were carried out in three northern Italian centers (Verona, Bolzano and Padova) affiliated with the Italian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (IBMDR). The average volume of BM collected was equivalent in both genders(More)
We report a bone marrow transplant which was HLA matched, with major and minor ABO and minor RhD incompatibility (anti-RhD antibody) between the donor and recipient. When engraftment occurred, the recipient developed an anti-RhD antibody of donor origin detected by direct and indirect antiglobulin tests (DAT, IAT) and showed signs of mild hemolytic anemia.(More)
