We describe a 65-year-old woman with ochronosis and ankylosing spondylitis. The coexistence of these 2 diseases has not previously been described. Differential radiological features of these conditions, which share some resemblances from the clinical point of view, are highlighted.
BACKGROUND & AIMS Inadequate data are available about retreatment of nonresponders to interferon (IFN) and ribavirin. Thus, this study evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of a 48-week therapy with pegylated IFN-alpha-2b plus high-dose ribavirin in patients who have failed to respond to the combination. Treatment up to 48 weeks also in patients who have… (More)
The case of a 45 year old woman affected by both Behçet's syndrome (BS) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is reported. Cervical spine involvement was observed long before the appearance of the sacroiliac and lumbar changes.
The case is reported of a 42 year old white woman meeting currently used diagnostic criteria for both ankylosing spondylitis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). As found in a previously described similar case of a black man, HLA typing showed antigens associated with both SLE and seronegative spondyloarthropathy. This case thus supports the hypothesis… (More)
In order to evaluate the prevalence of audiovestibular disturbances in Behçet's syndrome, we submitted 20 consecutive patients and 20 control subjects to detailed audiologic and vestibular examination in the last 3 years. A sensorineural hearing loss was found in 12 patients, 2 of whom revealed sudden deafness. Two other patients with neuro-Behçet's… (More)
The aim of the study was to assess the microbiological activity and clinical efficacy of colistin and rifampin combination against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. The antimicrobial activity of the colistin/rifampin combination was evaluated using the checkerboard and time-kill curve methods against different MDR P. aeruginosa… (More)
A case of bla(VIM-1) producing E. cloacae disseminated infection in a patient submitted to orthotopic liver transplantation is described. Synergism between colistin, rifampin and imipenem was studied in vitro and this combination of three drugs was used to treat E. cloacae infection. The synergistic activity of this combination was demonstrated showing an… (More)
In order to reduce the subjective factor in evaluating sacroiliac joint radiographs we further evaluated changes seen on standard plain films of patients suffering from Behçet's syndrome (BS) by using computed tomography (CT). Sacroiliac joint films of 20 consecutive patients with BS were mixed with those of 20 consecutive control patients and read blindly… (More)
