Muskrats are aquatic rodents of moderate size which are plentiful throughout North America, but are not used commonly in the laboratory. Recently, we tested the feasibility of muskrats as experimental models and have found them to be acquired and cared for easily in conventional laboratory animal facilities. Some of their natural characteristics and(More)
Thirty-one of 290 cats (10.7%) from the area around St Louis, Mo, were infected with Eurytrema procyonis. In some cats, the pancreas was severely affected, with almost complete atrophy and fibrous replacement of the gland. Both bicarbonate and protein secretions were impaired, although clinically evident pancreatic insufficiency was not seen.
Eight cases of ulcerative dermatitis occurred in 7 groups of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from skin lesions of all affected rats; in some affected rats, coagulase-positive S aureus was also isolated from the feces and oropharynx. Amputation of toes of chronically affected rats resulted in remission of(More)
Since the late 1980s, the rabbit model for sinusitis has been widely used for experimental studies on sinusitis; however, the clinical relevance of these experimental data has been questioned. To elucidate the role of leukotrienes in the pathogenesis of sinusitis, leukotriene B4 (LTB4) levels were determined in acute Streptococcus pneumoniae sinusitis in(More)
In the North American opossum, Didelphis virginiana unilateral complete ureteral obstruction (ECO) and partial unilateral (EPO) ureteral obstruction were created during the early metanephric stage of kidney development in pups attached to the teat (approximately 4.5 cm. long, 20 days old). At 70 days of pouch life (full-term equivalent in the human) some(More)
Injectable anesthetic drugs used in rodents are often mixed and further diluted to increase the convenience and accuracy of dosing. We evaluated clinical refractometry as a simple and rapid method of quality control and mixing error detection of rodent anesthetic or analgesic mixtures. Dilutions of ketamine, xylazine, acepromazine, and buprenorphine were(More)
INTRODUCTION Traditional frontal sinus stents serve only as mechanical devices. It has been proposed that stents also may serve as drug-delivery systems for the topical application of drugs that minimize postoperative scarring. Paclitaxel (Taxol), which has recognized antiscarring effects, may be incorporated via a polymeric formulation into standard rubber(More)
A hypoxia chamber was constructed which allowed for the sequential sampling and blood gas analysis of buffer bathing cells in culture which were subjected to graded periods of hypoxia. Following hypoxia, the human fetal small intestinal cells (CCL-241) were placed into a normoxic environment for the remainder of a 24 h study period. A cytotoxicity assay(More)
