Pneumonia is a serious problem worldwide. We recently demonstrated that innate defense mechanisms of the lung are highly inducible against pneumococcal pneumonia. To determine the breadth of protection conferred by stimulation of lung mucosal innate immunity, and to identify cells and signaling pathways activated by this treatment, mice were treated with an(More)
The force required to rupture bonds between individual Staphylococcus aureus MSCRAMMs and surfaces coated with extracellular matrix molecules has been quantified by using optical tweezers. The observed binding forces between fibrinogen or fibronectin and S. aureus MSCRAMMs occurred as an approximate integer multiple of 20 or 25 pN, respectively.
Fluridone, an inhibitor of abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis, strongly stimulated rooting of nodal stem segments of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivar Arran Banner cultured in darkness on tuberisation medium. Inclusion of 10-6 M ABA in the culture medium prevented this rooting response, indicating that root proliferation in the presence of fluridone(More)
Intracerebroventricular administration of the synthetic cholecystokinin analog SNF9007 (Asp-Tyr-D-Phe-Gly-Trp-[NMe]-Nle-Asp-Phe-NH2) produced antinociception in the mouse hot-plate and warm water tail-flick tests. The mechanisms of its analgesic actions were assessed by administering antagonists selective for CCK (cholecystokinin octapeptide, sulfated)-A(More)
