Pyrrolizidine alkaloid poisoning in rats: protective effects of dietary cysteine.
Response of Japanese quail to dietary and injected pyrrolizidine (Senecio) alkaloid.
Effect of pyrrolizidine alkaloids on liver microsome mixed-function oxidase activity in rats.
The results suggest that pyrroles produced as a result of hepatic metabolism of pyrrolizidine alkaloids directly inhibit the enzymes involved in their own production, probably via effects on protein synthesis or protein degradation.

FACTORS INFLUENCING PYRROLIZ ID INE ( SENECIO ) ALKALOID METABOLISM : SPECIES , LIVER SULFHYDRYLS AND RUMEN FERMENTATION 1
The metabolism in vitro of pyrrolizidine alkaloids by microsomes from eight animal species was studied. The rates of pyrrole production ranged from high to low in the following order: male hamster >…

It was concluded that dietary selenium status was likely to influence the metabolism of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, but there was no difference in the rate of metabolism of alkaloid by microsomes from seenium deficient or se lenium supplemented rats.
