A technique based on an amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS-PCR) for the analysis of 854 single A. lumbricoides eggs collected from 68 human stool samples from seven Brazilian states detected the mutation in codon 200 at a frequency of 0.5%, which indicates that these parasite populations have the potential to develop high levels of resistance in the future.

It has been shown that wild rodents with semi-aquatic habits are capable to establish a productive infection of this parasite, and these wild rodents are likely also to be capable to spread the disease in endemic areas.
Spatial and Seasonal Distribution of Holochilus sciureus with Schistosoma mansoni Infection in an Endemic Area for Schistosomiasis in Brazil
- Carla Fernanda do Carmo-Silva, Andrea Teles-Reis, N. Silva-Souza
- Biology, MedicineActa Parasitologica

The H. sciureus rodent shows a high natural infection rate for S. mansoni in the flooded fields of São Bento, regardless of the weather station, capture distance, and biological aspects, and it is demonstrated that it may inhabit a much more extensive area that is currently described in the literature.
Schistosoma mansoni Infection in Holochilus sciureus Shows Sex-Related Differences in Parasitological Patterns

It was shown that infection in H. sciureus females provides a favorable environment for the development of adult worms, despite impairing the parasite fecundity, and this rodent may be an excellent biological model for S. mansoni experimental infections.
