The genetically significant dose in the population of Varese Province (about 700,000 inhabitants) from X-ray diagnosis in 1972 has been estimated. The methods adopted and data utilized for the estimate are indicated. Results are discussed in view of the possibility of reducing doses.
Dose distribution in blanket irradiation was determined using the photodensitometer in a life-size dummy; doses in critical tissues (especially heart, spinal cord, bone marrow) are discussed with reference to likely biological risks.
Photographic dosimetry was used to ascertain the space distribution of the dose in mediastinal irradiation with sagittal median fields by means of cobalt therapy; the discrepancy between values in tissue-equivalent dummy and homogeneous dummy was minor and is discussed; comparisons are also made with computer values.
Measurements of the doses were carried out on phantoms in order to determine the dose in the marrow and gonads of patients undergoing radio-therapeutic treatment with telecobalt therapy with fixed fields.
