Medicine, Engineering
In this study, a realistic in vitro experimental model and corresponding computational model of the cerebral vasculature are established that can be used to investigate flow and embolus migration and lodging in the brain and provide an in vitro benchmark data set for flow in a realistic cerebrovascular model.
Arterial pulsations drive oscillatory flow of CSF but not directional pumping
- R. T. KedarasettiPatrick J. DrewFrancesco Costanzo
- 22 June 2020
Medicine
Simulations match the experimental results and show that arterial pulsations only drive oscillatory motion of CSF in the PVS, and the observed directional CSF flow can be explained by naturally occurring and/or experimenter-generated pressure differences.
Functional hyperemia drives fluid exchange in the paravascular space

Medicine, Physics
Simulations suggest that functional hyperemia may serve to increase metabolite clearance from the PVS, and show that the deformability of the brain tissue needs to be accounted for when studying fluid flow and metabolite transport.
Gut-Brain Hydraulics: Brain motion and CSF circulation is driven by mechanical coupling with the abdomen
- C. S. GarborgBeatrice Ghitti Patrick J. Drew
- 1 February 2025
Biology, Medicine
The brain is hydraulically linked to the abdominal compartment, and fluid flow in the brain is coupled to body movements, providing a mechanism by which the mechanics of the viscera directly impact brain health.
