The isolated allelopathic fraction showed strong inhibition activity on the growth of Ch Lorella pyrenoidosa and Microcystis aeruginosa but had no inhibition on Chlorella vulgaris, and was identified by nuclear magnetic resonance and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry as ethyl 2-methylacetoacetate.

The growth inhibitory effects of 5 marine macroalgae Porphyra tenera, Laminaria japonica, Ulva pertusa, Enteromorpha clathrata, and Undaria pinnatifida on Skeletonema costatum were evaluated by adding crude seawater extracts of macroalgal dry tissue into the culture medium containing S. costatum.
