Metabolic compartmentation of glutamate and glutamine: Morphological evidence obtained by quantitative immunocytochemistry in rat cerebellum
The data indicate that glutamate is effectively converted to glutamine in all categories of glial cells, and that glutamate synthesis prevails in each of the three types of excitatory terminals in the cerebellar cortex.

There is a high concentration of GAD, and consequently of GABA, within the Purkinje axon terminals, and this finding, together with the observations that GABA mimics the action of their natural transmitter and that GABA is released on stimulation of the cerebellar cortex, points to GABA as the transmitter ofPurkinje cells.
