Suprageneric Classification of Collembola Entomobryomorpha
The suprageneric classification of the order Entomobryomorpha is examined and revised and one new subfamily, Capbryinae, and two new tribes are proposed. Expand
Recent horizontal transfer of mellifera subfamily mariner transposons into insect lineages representing four different orders shows that selection acts only during horizontal transfer.
Maximum likelihood methods were applied to the coding sequences and it was determined that the copies in each genome were evolving neutrally, whereas reconstructed ancestral coding sequences appeared to be under selection, which strengthens the previous hypothesis that the primary selective constraint on mariner sequence evolution is the act of horizontal transfer between genomes. Phosphorylation and the N-terminal extension of the regulatory light chain help orient and align the myosin heads in Drosophila flight muscle.
The results suggest that the R LC N-terminal extension serves as a "tether" to help pre-position the myosin heads for attachment to actin, while phosphorylation of the RLC promotes head orientations that allow optimal interactions with the thin filament. Expand
Separating the effects of forest type and elevation on the diversity of litter invertebrate communities in a humid tropical forest in Puerto Rico
The differences observed from the lower slopes to the summits, in animal abundance, species richness and the uniformity of communities, are better explained by the contribution of forest composition to the chemical and physical nature of litter and forest heterogeneity, rather than to direct effects of temperature and rainfall differences. A phylogenetic analysis of the cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI) in 17 species of Lepidocyrtus and Pseudosinella supports the hypothesis that most populations of morphospecies differing only in color pattern are distinct species, thus validating Yoshii's color pattern species concept. Expand
