Treatment of depression in patients with alcohol or other drug dependence: a meta-analysis.
Antidepressant medication exerts a modest beneficial effect for patients with combined depressive- and substance-use disorders, and care should be exercised in the diagnosis of depression-either by observing depression to persist during at least a brief period of abstinence or through efforts by clinical history to screen out substance-related depressive symptoms.

It was found that 90% of respondents with cannabis dependence had a lifetime mental disorder, compared to 55% without cannabis dependence, which underscores the importance of thorough and systematic evaluation of patients seeking treatment for cannabis dependence.

Treatment-seeking substance use disorder patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are at a very high risk for additional externalizing disorders, and results indicate increased levels of BPD and MD for alcohol compared with drugs as primary substance of abuse.
