This paper provides a comprehensive and detailed graph-theoretic analysis of Kron reduction encompassing topological, algebraic, spectral, resistive, and sensitivity analyses and leads to novel insights both on the mathematical and the physical side.
Synchronization and transient stability in power networks and non-uniform Kuramoto oscillators
- F. Dörfler, F. Bullo
- MathematicsProceedings of the American Control Conference
- 29 October 2009
A singular perturbation analysis shows the equivalence between the classic swing equations and a non-uniform Kuramoto model characterized by multiple time constants, non-homogeneous coupling, and non- uniform phase shifts.
Data-Enabled Predictive Control: In the Shallows of the DeePC
- J. Coulson, J. Lygeros, F. Dörfler
- Computer Science, MathematicsEuropean Control Conference
- 14 November 2018
The DeePC algorithm is shown to be equivalent to the classical and widely adopted Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm in the case of deterministic linear time-invariant systems and regularizations to the Dee PC algorithm are proposed.

- D. Molzahn, F. Dörfler, J. Lavaei
- EngineeringIEEE Transactions on Smart Grid
- 25 July 2017
This paper reviews distributed algorithms for offline solution of optimal power flow (OPF) problems as well as online algorithms for real-time solution of OPF, optimal frequency control, optimal voltage control, and optimal wide-area control problems.
Breaking the Hierarchy: Distributed Control and Economic Optimality in Microgrids
- F. Dörfler, J. Simpson-Porco, F. Bullo
- EngineeringIEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems
- 8 January 2014
This paper builds from a first-principle analysis of decentralized primary droop control on centralized, decentralized, and distributed architectures for secondary frequency regulation and finds that averaging-based distributed controllers using communication among the generation units offer the best combination of flexibility and performance.
Synchronization in complex oscillator networks and smart grids
- F. Dörfler, M. Chertkov, F. Bullo
- PhysicsProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
- 31 July 2012
This work presents a unique, concise, and closed-form condition for synchronization of the fully nonlinear, nonequilibrium, and dynamic network of a strongly coupled and sufficiently homogeneous network.
On the Critical Coupling for Kuramoto Oscillators
- F. Dörfler, F. Bullo
- MathematicsSIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems
- 17 November 2010
It is proved that the multi-rate Kuramoto model is locally topologically conjugate to a first-order Kuramoto models with scaled natural frequencies, and necessary and sufficient conditions for almost global phase synchronization and local frequency synchronization are presented.
