We present a novel air-bridge subwavelength grating reflector with very high reflectivity to be used as a top mirror in a VCSEL structure. We explain the design method, model the structure using both RCWA and FDTD, and predict the characteristics of a Fabry-Perot structure built with this reflector. We describe the fabrication of the suspended grating.
We demonstrate a Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) phase methodology to estimate resonant wavelengths in Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity structures. We validate the phase method in a conventional Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) structure using a transfer-matrix method, and compare results with a FDTD reflectance method. We extend this approach to… (More)
The design and simulation of a 1×N optical switch is presented. Sub-¿s switching is achieved through a voltage-controlled optical phase array. Electrode voltages are provided by a high-voltage CMOS chip. Switching angles are within 2°.
A novel reprogrammable optical phase array (ROPA) device is presented as a reconfigurable electro-optic element. One specific application of the ROPA, a 1 x 6 electro-optic space switch, is fully described. Switching angles are within 2 degrees , and switching is achieved through a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) controlled, diffraction… (More)
We demonstrate a method for the fabrication of suspended gratings in GaAs/AlGaAs. These gratings are designed to act as high reflectivity mirrors in vertical cavity lasers. The fabrication process used is simple, and with a high yield. Stiction or fracture due to surface tension as well as stiction of grating fingers to one another is circumvented. In… (More)
