Occurrence of two distinct urotensin II-related peptides in zebrafish provides new insight into the evolutionary history of the urotensin II gene family.
The study reveals the occurrence of four distinct UII paralogous systems in vertebrates that may exert distinct functions, both in tetrapods and teleosts.
Comparative distribution of the mRNAs encoding urotensin I and urotensin II in zebrafish
The distribution of UI, UIIalpha and UIIbeta mRNAs in different organs by quantitative RT-PCR analysis and the cellular localization of the three m RNAs in the spinal cord by in situ hybridization (ISH) histochemistry show that the UI gene is mainly expressed in the caudal portion of the spinal Cord and, to a lesser extent, in the brain.
